CPA board exam topnotcher originally wanted to be a doctor

MANILA, Philippines – Jianne Ilysse Yu ranked No.1 in the December 2024 Certified Public Accountants Licensure Examination (CPALE). But did you know that this wasn’t her first career choice? It turned out that Yu had first wanted to become a doctor before eventually choosing accountancy. Could this be her destiny?

According to Cebu Daily News, Yu completed her BS Accountancy degree as Summa Cum Laude and the batch valedictorian from the University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City, central Philippines.

Aside from achieving the marvelous feat of topping the accountancy board exams, considered among the toughest of the professional tests, Yu also ranked sixth June 2024 Certified Tax Technicians Examination.

It’s not surprising, then, that this smart young lady was conferred with the Education Excellence Award by the National Association of CPAs.

While she’s clearly an achiever in the accountancy field, Yu revealed that it wasn’t actually her first choice. In her younger years, she wished to become a doctor.

When the pandemic hit, however, Yu and her batchmates were hurled into the digital world where face-to-face, physical interaction was considered akin to danger. She felt that she had to change her dream.

Yu chose accountancy, thanks to a friend’s influence. And while it’s quite different from her first choice, this young lady was able to adjust so easily. Banking on her digital knowledge, she made the most of her laptop and online resources to learn her course.

She summarized her notes, created organized tables, and color-coded things for easier recall. These apparently worked because she soon excelled.

But it might not come as a surprise that this young lady was also an achiever in her younger years. According to the CIE British School, she had also graduated as Salutatorian of the Junior High School Batch 2018 and went on to graduate as Valedictorian of the Senior High School Batch 2020.

Aside from Yu, two other graduates from the University of San Carlos also ranked in the top 10:

  • Kristina Noelle Odal Vistal, Top 8
  • Jeliel Miguel Bolido, Top 10
