MANILA, Philippines – Popular Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, known for her role as Shancai in the huge hit series "Meteor Garden," has passed away. She was 48.
Hsu is also known by her stage name Big S.
Report from focustaiwan said that Hsu died of pneumonia after contracting influenza during the Lunar New Year holiday. The sad news was confirmed by her sister on Monday, February 3, 2025, through her agent.
"Our whole family came to Japan for a trip, and my dearest and most kindhearted sister Barbie Hsu died of influenza-induced pneumonia and unfortunately left us," Hsu's sister Dee Hsu said through her agent.
“I am thankful to be her sister in this life, and grateful that we have taken care of each other and kept each other company all these years. I will always be thankful to her and remember her. Shan (Barbie Hsu’s nickname), rest in peace. We love you always. Together remember forever.”
The report did not confirm when and where Barbie Hsu died.
Sources said Hsu family is currently still in Japan and Barbie Hsu will likely be cremated there before her remains are brought back to Taiwan.
Hsu is survived by her South Korean husband, singer and DJ Koo Jun-yup as well as her 10-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son.
Hsu became popular in the Philippines in 2003 for her role as Shancai, the lead female character in the Taiwanese series "Meteor Garden," where she played opposite Jerry Yan as Daoming Si. The show created a wave of Asianovelas in the Philippines.
