MANILA, Philippines – The Hong Kong Police has recorded an increase in shoplifting cases in their country and sadly, several Filipinos are involved in it.

In an advisory issued by the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Police recorded a 12% increase in shoplifting cases from January to May 2024. The said increase is compared to the same period in 2023.
"Sa kasamaang palad, sangkot ang ilang turistang Pilipino sa Hong Kong sa mga kasong ito, bilang mga inaakusahan o bilang biktima."
Because of this, the Consulate reminded Filipino tourists to comply with Hong Kong laws and also be alert to avoid unwanted incidents.

Theft in Hong Kong can result in fines and imprisonment of up to 10 years.
"Sa ilalim ng Hong Kong Theft ordinance, ang pagnanakaw o theft ay may parusang multa at/o pagkakabilanggo hanggang 10 taon," according to the advisory.
The Consulate did not mention the number of Filipinos involved in the increase in shoplifting cases in Hong Kong.
