Former seafarer, teacher, business owner now a lawyer

MANILA, Philippines – The 2024 Bar Examination results were announced on Friday, December 13, ushering in a new group of certified lawyers in the Philippines.

One of those is Charmaine Arce Gabelo, a 43-year-old mother of two from Cavite, who has worn many hats throughout her journey — from seafarer and teacher to toothpaste manufacturer and shawarma business owner.

Gabelo is among the 3,962 new lawyers in the country, following the Supreme Court's release of the 2024 Bar Exam results.

Now, she adds another title to her list of achievements: certified lawyer.

In a report by ABS-CBN News, Gabelo said she really struggled during her studies and even thought about giving up several times. But despite the difficulties, she genuinely loved what she was doing, which motivated her to persevere until she finished her studies and eventually took the Bar exam.

“Iyon ‘yong gusto mo lagi, kada araw may natututunan ka, kada araw nacha-challenge ka, kada araw feeling mo may mababago ka sa buhay, hindi lang ikaw, hindi lang pamilya mo, pati ibang tao,” she said.

She also mentioned that she pursued it a bit late, as she took on several jobs first before deciding to study law.

She said she spent 12 years running businesses, including shawarma, burger, and chorizo production, in addition to managing a rental property. She also worked as a tutor. Through her journey, she realized that not all of one's dreams are granted immediately by God.

Gabelo realized she wanted to pursue law during the pandemic. Initially, she planned to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) since she was tutoring at a private school. She even considered pursuing a master’s and a doctorate degree. However, she ultimately decided to push through with law school. Her friends were aware of the hardships she faced, even though she always managed to smile through it all.

Gabelo said she felt as though God was calling her to pursue law school. She proudly shared that she never missed a single class — whether she was prepared, had read the materials, or not — she maintained a perfect attendance record!

Her message, “Walang late na pangarap. Trabahuhin mo, ibigay mo talaga ang puso, at saka lahat ng magagawa mo…”

Congrats, Atty. Gabelo!
