Super Typhoon Julian exits PAR, but may return on Wednesday – PAGASA

MANILA, Philippines – Super Typhoon Julian (Krathon) slightly intensified and now outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but may still re-enter on Wednesday, state weather bureau PAGASA announced in its 11:00 am bulletin on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

As of 10:00 a.m., the center of the eye of Super Typhoon Julian was estimated based on all available data 235 km West of Itbayat, Batanes.

'Julian' has maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 240 km/h, and central pressure of 915 hPa. It is moving westward slowly.

TROPICAL CYCLONE WIND SIGNALS (TCWS) IN EFFECT

Signal No. 2 was hoisted over the areas of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Bacarra, Pasuquin, Bangui, Vintar, Burgos, Pagudpud, Dumalneg, Adams), and the northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Praxedes, Claveria, Sanchez-Mira).

Signal No. 1 was raised over the areas of rest of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, the rest of mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, the northern portion of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran, Dinalungan), and the northern portion of Nueva Ecija (Carranglan, Lupao, Pantabangan).

TRACK AND INTENSITY OUTLOOK

'Julian' is forecast to recurve towards the sea southwest of Taiwan today through tomorrow (October 2) morning.

On the track forecast, the super typhoon will make landfall along the southwestern coast of Taiwan tomorrow morning or afternoon.

It will then cross the rugged terrain of Taiwan before emerging over the sea east of Taiwan on Thursday (October 3) morning.

Afterwards, Julian will move northeastward towards the East China Sea, and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday evening or Friday (October 4) early morning, then turn northwestward on Friday evening to Saturday (October 6) early morning once over the East China Sea.

TROPICAL CYCLONES

Super Typhoon Julian is the Philippines' 10th tropical cyclone for 2024. It developed into a tropical depressions last Friday, September 27.

On average, there are 20 tropical cyclones that could form or enter the PAR each year. Only half of those are projected to make landfall.
