Student's reply to professor proud of high failure rate in exam sparks discussion

What does it mean when many students fail an exam given by a teacher or professor in a particular subject?

That’s the topic being discussed and debated by netizens after a post went viral showing a screenshot from a group chat, where a student responded to their professor who had mentioned that they needed to study because many students fail his exams.

An exam is a way to assess and evaluate the learning of students on a subject after a session or discussion.

"POV: Patulog ka na pero biglang nakipag-sagutan kaklase mo sa teacher niyong feeling major subject ang hawak," the uploader captioned.

In the screenshot, the teacher reminded their students to review for the upcoming midterm examination.

"Hindi sa pagmamayabang pero konti lang pumapasa sa subject ko. Halos lahat bumabagsak. So better be prepared," the teacher said.

But one of the students did not sit well and replied to the teacher.

“There's no reason to be proud that many students are failing the subject you're handling. Maybe it's time to reassess why your students are struggling. It could be a reflection of the quality of your teaching. If more students are failing than passing, it doesn't define those who failed---maybe it defines you and your teaching approach,” the student said.

It is not clear from the screenshot whether the teacher responded to the student. The post, however, received various reactions and comments from netizens.

"In my experience as a student, there are teachers who are so good at teaching that students do not need to make extra effort to study the lessons."

"Isn't it more of a shame that a disproportionate amount of students are failing your subjects when they pass others? I've experienced the duality of professors din, there's a great difference with the so called 'terrors,' and those with high standards but sympathize with the students. Usually may linyahan din ang dalawa. It's either 'maraming bumabagsak dito'/'nambabagsak ako ng studyante' or 'mahirap itong subject, pero ayaw kong bumagsak kayo.'"

"Tama yon. Saktong sakto. Guro ako at mahihiya ako na halos lahat babagsak. May mga iilan ilan na bagsak talaga pero may mali sa guro kung halos lahat bagsak."

"The student is right. I am a teacher and I will be alarmed if most of my students fail. This is a sign that my teaching style is no longer effective. I need to shift to other teaching styles that will fit to my students way of learning. Teacher should not be proud that most of her students fail instead reflect on his/her teaching style."

"The success of your students is a reflection of your success as a teacher. If your aim is to create struggle for them, then you're not fulfilling your role. Aim for more success, not failings."

"I agree. If consistent na halos walang pumapasa sa mga klase niya, may pagkukulang sa pagtuturo ang guro. Halintulad ito sa manager na mataas ang attrition, na maraming nag-re-resign dahil sa poor management."

"A student’s failure is a failure for both — the teacher and the student. Learning is a collaborative effort."

What are your thoughts about it?
