Mom admits feeling like a failure: ‘I am a teacher, but my son is a dropout’

A mother received words of encouragement from netizens for sharing that, despite being a school teacher, her own son is actually a high school dropout.

Being a teacher is challenging, as they shape young minds and serve as role models. This becomes even harder for teachers who are also mothers, as their children face societal expectations due to their parent’s profession.

Mom admits feeling like a failure: ‘I am a teacher, but my son is a dropout’

Teacher Aisheen R. Baguio from Dipolog City admitted that it was heartbreaking to finally decide to make her high school son quit school. In a viral Facebook post, Teacher Aisheen shared how painful it was to decide to have her son leave school, but she knew it was something she had to do.

She wrote, “Today, I feel the pain of failure. I failed as a mother and as a teacher. It was shameful, and I don't even want to talk about it with other people, but I need to share it for awareness, and it might also give some lessons, especially to those who are going through situations like this.”

According to Teacher Aisheen, she is a single mother who had to struggle caring for her son while being a public school teacher assigned away from home. Being assigned in a far-flung area, she had no choice but to go home only during weekends or twice a month. This started way back when his son was still in Grade 1. Now his son is 12 years old. Every year, his son would be transferred from one school to another depending on who would look after him. She had to endure the struggle for 7 long years, both for her passion for teaching and the need to make a living.

Teacher Aisheen has been requesting and praying for a transfer to a school closer to home, but her request remains pending to this day. With her experience, she realized that “being a good teacher doesn't guarantee that you are a good mother.” And if given the choice between her career and her child's future, she understands that she should have chosen her child, as no “treasure can compensate for the fulfillment of being a good mother.”

She also hopes the government will prioritize transfers for working single parents so they can better care for their children. Teacher Aisheen’s post has earned many reactions from other parents, and also teachers, who share the same struggles of being a working mother.

Her post has gone viral with more than 6,000 reactions and almost 10,000 shares on Facebook.
