PhilHealth to cover eyeglasses, wheelchairs, crutches by 2025

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. announced that by January 2025, the cost of prescription glasses and other mobility aids such as crutches, wheelchairs, and walkers will be part of its coverage. Rep. Erwin Tulfo of ACT-CIS party-list made the announcement on Sunday, September 22.

According to Tulfo, it was House Speaker Martin Romualdez who instructed PhilHealth to include the coverage of these additional health and mobility needs.

The House Speaker mentioned that he regularly receives requests for financial aid to acquire wheelchairs. In response, he also decided to offer glasses, crutches, and walkers, all of which are beneficial for senior citizens and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

PhilHealth president Manny Ledesma previously requested that the House leadership allow them until January next year to roll out the program nationwide. He said they need the additional time to finalize its mechanics and how to implement it effectively. Hence, the program is expected to be launched by January 2025.

“Pumayag po ang PhilHealth na sagutin na ang mga kagamitang ito simula sa pagpasok ng taon,” Tulfo added.

PhilHealth officials said they have yet to finalize the mechanics on choosing the optical centers, drug stores, and other stores that can distribute the items to eligible PhilHealth members.
