Female teacher climbs flagpole for flag ceremony, earns admiration

It is said that being a teacher is a noble profession because it is "buwis-buhay" or involves giving one's life for the students and their future. But what if a teacher is literally risking their life for their students and the entire school community?

Netizens admired a video of a female teacher who climbed the flagpole of their school for the flag ceremony, a routine usually done in the morning before classes start.

In the video, the fearless teacher, Carol Baro Figuro, a 38-year-old master teacher who has been teaching at Savidug Elementary School in Sabtang, Batanes for four years, can be seen as if participating in palosebo, a Filipino game where one climbs a greased bamboo pole to retrieve a small flag at the top.

The school principal, Arlene Castillo, shared the video of Teacher Carol and expressed immense pride in her teacher's dedication to the profession.

In an interview, Teacher Carol mentioned that she has been accustomed to climbing coconut trees since she was young, so climbing the flagpole is nothing new to her. She prefers to take on the risk herself rather than leave it to the students.

In addition to her flag pole climbs, Teacher Carol’s dedication to teaching is remarkable as she travels approximately 14 kilometers just to get to school.

In her Facebook post, Teacher Carol thanked those who admired her but mentioned that her actions were not intended to seek praise. Instead, they are a result of her love for the children.

“Super overwhelmed po ako sa saludo at appreciation po ninyo sa simpleng act ko po, hindi lang naman po ang pag-akyat sa flagpole ang ginagawa ko na men's job for school and even po sa bahay… I was so thankful po kay Lord for blessing me these talents na ginagamit ko naman po para makatulong po sa iba…” she said.

Good job, Teacher Carol but please always take care!
