Carlos Yulo and mother in feud over money, girlfriend issues?

MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos are celebrating because, after Hidilyn Diaz's first gold medal in women's weightlifting at the 2020 Olympics, the Philippines has won a double gold, this time thanks to Carlos Yulo, who triumphed in the floor exercise and vault of men's artistic gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

While all Filipinos are happy about Yulo's victory, the first gold medal in the ongoing Olympics, there is controversy and intrigue surrounding the apparent lack of celebration from some members of his family, particularly his mother, Angelica Yulo. Netizens noticed that the mother did not post any congratulatory message or post about her son's success and even seemed to favor Japan's representative in the men's all-around, Shinnosuke Oka, who won the gold medal, while her son ended up in 12th place.

“Japan pa din talaga…Lakas [flexed biceps, face with rolling eyes emojis],” Angelica captioned her post on August 1.

It's also noticeable that Carlos is absent from the profile picture used by his mother on her official Facebook page.

February 17, 2023, was the last time his mother wished Carlos a “Happy Birthday.” February 16 was the gymnast's 23rd birthday. Since then, Angelica has not posted anything about Carlos and no longer mentions her son's name.

Angelica's Facebook posts also feature loving messages for her children Jorielgel, Karl, and Elaiza, who, like Carlos, are also gymnasts. However, it is noticeable that she does not include Carlos's achievements in her posts.

Netizens ended up revisiting Angelica's previous posts from August 2023, which, according to their speculation, might have been hints directed at her son Carlos. Based on the post, it seems that the source of the conflict between mother and son might be related to the son’s love life and financial matters.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo Philippines, Angelica said: “Ang naging mitsa lang naman ever since is ‘yung babae talaga.”

After Carlos clinched the gold medal at the Olympics, cash incentives and rewards started pouring in for him. This includes the PHP10 million mandated by Republic Act 10699 of 2015, also known as the "National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act," which stipulates that any gold medalist in an athletic event like the Olympics is awarded PHP10 million.

In addition, Carlos will also receive PHP 3 million from the House of Representatives and a condominium unit worth PHP 24 million from Megaworld Corporation in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

It seems that Angelica has responded to those criticizing her, suggesting that her son has already become a millionaire and that she might either interfere or reach some kind of agreement with him.

"Wala naman akong pakialam sa 24M worth fully-furnished condo ni Caloy or sa 10M nya from our government. Deserve n'ya naman un,” she said.

In another Facebook post, Angelica mentioned that they, as a family, are in discussions to resolve or fix their issues.

"Magandang hapon sa lahat!"

"Alam ko may mga pagkakamali ako pero inaayos na naming mag papamilya ang issue," she said.

"But maybe for now, I'll either turn off the comments section or deactivate my personal account to prevent you from entering our private lives. Umaasa ako na sooner or later magiging OK din ang lahat on all of us. Thank you!"

"EDIT: As you may have noticed, some of you are blocked on my personal account. For now, I’d prefer to deactivate it and reactivate it soon if all goes well," she said.

As of writing this article, there are no updates on whether the mother and son have reconciled.

  1. The mother should swallow her pride and celebrate her son's incredible and historic achievements along with the rest of the country. Whatever concerns she or others had about the gf being a "distraction" has been proven wrong. Twice, in gold!!!
