Garra is an incoming Grade 6 student at De La Salle University.
According to the Facebook post of the Department of Education (DepEd), Garra erased an 18 year old record in 100 LC meter backstroke in swimming elementary division.
Besides the backstroke event, Garra also smashed the record of Dorothy Grace Ong from National Capital Region (NCR) in 50 meter backstroke way back in 2006.
Garra is also part of the record-breaking performance of her team in 200 meter medley relay and 400 meter relay.
“Sobrang saya ko po kasi alam ko sa sarili ko na na-accomplish ko yung goal ko na maka-break po ng Palaro record,” Garra said.
To achieve her goals, Garra disclosed that she trains everyday just to get ready for the 2024 Palarong Pambansa.
“Nagte-train po ako 7 times a week tapos minsan may hapon din po tapos bago po mag-Palaro may camp po kami ng one week, morning and afternoon po yung training,” she said.
This is just the beginning for the swimming career of the young athlete as she aims to be part of the Philippine swimming team in bigger competitions.
“Plano ni Sophia na magpatuloy pa sa kaniyang karera sa swimming upang maging kinatawan ng Pilipinas sa marami pang swimming competition,” said in the Facebook post of DepEd.
The National Capital Region (NCR) emerged as the overall champion of the Palarong Pambansa 2024, concluding the event with a remarkable 98 gold, 66 silver, and 74 bronze medals.
Region 4A (CALABARZON) came in second place with 57 golds, 51 silvers, and 53 bronzes, while Region 6 (Western Visayas) closely followed with 56 golds, 41 silvers, and 41 bronzes.
