VP Sara Duterte resigns as DepEd secretary

MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Sara Duterte has stepped down as Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) and as vice chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), Malacañang Palace confirmed on Wednesday.

According to Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cheloy Garafil, Duterte went to Malacañang at 2:21 p.m. today to tender her resignation.

Garafil said President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. accepted Duterte's resignation, which is effective Wednesday, July 19.

Garafil added that Duterte declined to give a reason why she quit from her post.

"She will continue to serve as Vice President. We thank her for her service," Garafil said in a statement.

Marcos appointed Duterte as education secretary upon their assumption to office on June 30, 2022.

Meanwhile, there are no information yet who will replace Duterte as DepEd chief.

Marcos and Duterte ran and won convincingly under the UniTeam Coalition in the 2022 election.
