MANILA, Philippines – Some local government units (LGUs) announced suspension of face-to-face classes on Friday, April 26, 2024, due to high heat index levels.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said heat index is what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature.

Based on the PAGASA’s forecast of heat index, a total of 36 areas will fall under “danger category” on Friday.

The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier said that some schools are implementing alternative delivery mode, including online and modular methods amid the suspension of classes.

Here's the list of class suspensions on Friday, April 26, 2024:

METRO MANILA

  • Caloocan City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Las Piñas City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Malabon City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public)
  • Mandaluyong City – no face-to-face-classes, preschool to senior high school (public and private)
  • City of Manila – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Muntinlupa City – no face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public)
  • Navotas City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Parañaque City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Pasay City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Pateros – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)

SOUTHERN LUZON

  • Cavite province
    • Bacoor City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
    • Carmona City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
    • General Trias City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
    • Imus City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
    • Kawit – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
    • Noveleta – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
    • Tanza – no face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public)
    • Trece Martires City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Laguna
    • Alaminos – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)

  • Quezon province

CAGAYAN VALLEY

  • Tuguegarao City, Cagayan - no face-to-face classes for preschool to senior high school (public)

CENTRAL LUZON

  • Angeles City – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Bataan – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Bulacan – no face-to-face classes, all levels; shift to blended learning while El Niño conditions prevail or until a new directive is released (Memorandum DRF-0424204-196)

VISAYAS

  • Iloilo City - no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Isabel, Leyte - no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)

MINDANAO

  • Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay - no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private), until May 3

Based on the Department of Education Order No. 37 series of 2022, private schools have full discretion to decide on their class suspensions provided that they have proper facilities to accommodate onsite classes during extreme heat conditions.

LGUs advised the public to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and take necessary precautions to avoid heat emergencies.
