MANILA, Philippines – Several local government units (LGUs) announced suspension of face-to-face classes and adjustment of schedule for Friday, April 12, 2024, due to the hot weather condition.
The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier said that some schools are implementing alternative delivery mode, including online and modular methods amid the suspension of classes.
Based on the PAGASA’s forecast of heat index, a total of six areas will fall under “danger category” on Friday. This includes Dagupan City in Pangasinan, Bacnotan in La Union, Puerto Princesa in Palawan, Aborlan in Palawan, Catarman in Northern Samar and Cotabato City in Maguindanao.
Here's the list of class suspensions and adjustments for Friday, April 12, 2024:
METRO MANILA
- Caloocan City
- Daycare (early hildhood care development) – shift to center-based program in alternative venue; April 8-12, 2024
- Kinder to senior high school, morning shift, April 8 to 12 – face-to-face classes will be held at 6:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, to have asynchronous classes on Wednesday and Thursday and face-to-face classes at 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. for Friday.
- Kinder to senior high school, morning shift, April 8 to 12 – asynchronus classes on Monday and Tuesday, face-to-face classes will be held at 6:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and face-to-face classes at 9:00 a.m. -12:00 n.n. on Friday.
- private schools: decision to cancel classes or hold alternative modes of learning will be up to the school administration
- Makati City – shortened schedule of classes, 6AM to 10AM for morning shifts and 3:30PM to 7:30PM for afternoon shifts
BICOL REGION
- Daraga, Albay – shift to modular and online class, all levels (public and private)
CENTRAL LUZON
- Bulacan province – shift to online classes, all levels (public and private); April 11 to 13
CAR
- Abra – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private); until April 13
VISAYAS
- Almeria, Biliran – no face-to-face classes, kindergarten to senior high school (public and private)
- Asturias, Cebu – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public)
- Compostela, Cebu – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
- Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu – no face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public)
- Liloan, Cebu – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public)
- Naga City, Cebu– no face-to-face classes, all levels (public); until April 14
- San Francisco, Cebu– no face-to-face classes, all levels (public); until April 13
- Sibonga, Cebu– no face-to-face classes, all levels (public)
- Talisay City, Cebu – no face-to-face classes, all levels (public); until April 14

Based on the Department of Education Order No. 37 series of 2022, private schools have full discretion to decide on their class suspensions provided that they have proper facilities to accommodate onsite classes during extreme heat conditions.
LGUs advised the public to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and take necessary precautions to avoid heat emergencies.
