MANILA, Philippines – For a topnotcher in the board exam, being the top 1 is already considered a great honor. But what if you find out that you have made a record-breaking history by becoming the highest scorer in the history of taking the mechanical engineering board exam?

That's the story of Mark Anthony Arcayan from Merida, Leyte, after he became the top 1 in the February 2022 Mechanical Engineer Licensure Examination with a rating of 96.60%.

However, Mark made history when it was revealed that he holds the record as the board taker with the highest score in the history of the mentioned professional board exam.

According to the interview with Mark, their family is a recipient of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). He is the third among seven siblings. His father serves as a barangay secretary, while his mother is a church volunteer in their area.

Mark is truly an achiever, having graduated from Visayas State University (VSU). He finished as the class valedictorian and magna cum laude in the mentioned state university.

He was also a scholar of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

In addition to this, he became an exchange student for six months in the Short-Term Exchange Program at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) in Tokyo, Japan.

In the midst of life's difficulties, Mark never imagined that he would be able to finish his studies. He even experienced bringing only rice, without any viand, as his packed meal to school.

Many people also looked down on them, saying that they wouldn't amount to anything in life because their family was already large and they were living in poverty. This became one of Mark's inspirations to prove to the judgmental people in their community that what they were saying about them was not true.

Due to the devastation caused by Typhoon Yolanda in the Visayas, his father lost his job.

Their mother's illnesses also reportedly became more frequent. His older sister had to stop her education and make sacrifices to ensure that he could continue his studies.

Fortunately, he became a scholar of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), which alleviated the burden of tuition fees, and he even received a regular allowance. Nevertheless, he chose to be thrifty despite the assistance.

When it comes to his studies, he truly worked hard and remained focused. Despite their hardships, he did not neglect his study habits.

He made sure that every night or in the early morning, he would read or practice solving math problems. However, he wasn't solely focused on studying.

“A month before the exam, I was consistent at managing my time to read formulas, elements, and solving equations. And this part for me was the hardest given that there’s a lot of distractions from video games down to social media. I really tried hard to discipline myself. Intelligence by itself is insufficient as you really need consistency if you want to make it to the top,” Engr. Arcayan explained.

If he wasn't in the mood, felt sleepy, or wasn't feeling well, he didn't force himself and took the time to rest. He emphasized that it's still important for a college student to enjoy their life in school.

This, according to Mark, was also the key to his review for the board exam. He maintained consistency in his time management, and it paid off with excellent results due to his hard work.

Congratulations, Mark!
