MANILA, Philippines – On Friday, Sky Cable informed its subscribers that it will discontinue its cable TV broadcast starting February 26, 2024.
As per an advisory sent via text message, Sky Cable, as reported by ABS-CBN News, stated that it will commence transitioning into a specialized internet service provider in accordance with the closing conditions of the PLDT-Sky Cable acquisition agreement.
They also announced it via their Facebook page.
“We would like to inform you that in anticipation of and pursuant to the closing conditions of the PLDT-SKY acquisition deal, SKY will now begin its transition into a dedicated internet service provider. Details at https://www.mysky.com.ph/,” it stated.
ABS-CBN Corp. previously reported that the Philippine Competition Commission has approved the transfer of Sky Cable's broadband business and associated assets to PLDT Inc.
ABS-CBN Corp. also stated in a disclosure to the stock exchange that the transaction, which encompasses the sale of all of Sky's issued and outstanding capital stock, is still contingent upon meeting several closing conditions.
As per Sky Cable, cable TV subscribers will not incur any charges from January 27 until the broadcast concludes on February 26. On the other hand, Sky Fiber subscribers will maintain uninterrupted internet service.
One of the celebrities who expressed sadness about the news is “It’s Showtime” host Anne Curtis-Heussaff.
She retweeted the news article of ABS-CBN News about it via X post.
“An end of another era 😞,” she said.
Netizens and X users also expressed their thoughts about it.
“Since elementary naka sky cable kami never nag palit Kasi loyal kapamilya. Ngayong matanda na nakakalungkot Lang. Na mawawala na sila. Pero di na nga rin uso ang TV kasi.”
“Effect ng online ‘yan eh, sa online streaming services na kasi nanonood mga tao ngayon.”
“I don’t think it’s a move backwards since everyone has switched to streaming. My subscription has been canceled for more than 5 years now and I don’t think I missed anything.”
“Gano’n talaga siguro, nalugi dahil halos mga tao ngayon may internet na kasi.”
