Magnitude 7.6 earthquake jolts Japan, prompts tsunami warning

MANILA, Philippines – A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck central Japan and its western coast on New Year's Day, prompting tsunami warnings.

Authorities advised affected residents to evacuate and prepare for possible aftershocks.

"All residents must evacuate immediately to higher ground," national broadcaster NHK said after the tremor hit the Noto region in Ishikawa prefecture at 3:10 p.m. Philippines time (4:10 p.m. Japan time).

Dangerous tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometers (190 miles) of the quake's epicenter along the Japan coast, the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

A tsunami of 1.2 metres was confirmed to have arrived in Wajima city in Ishikawa prefecture.

In a report by NHK, it shows buildings collapsed in Ishikawa, and tremors shook buildings in the capital Tokyo on the opposite coast.

More than 36,000 households lost electricity in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures, utilities provider Hokuriku Electric Power said.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a massive earthquake in Japan.

"No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," Phivolcs said.
