MANILA, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte is challenging President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. to step down as the country's chief executive.
The mayor made this statement at the "Hakbang ng Maisug Leaders Forum" in Davao City on Sunday, January 28.
“Mr. President, kung wala kay gugma ug aspiration sa imong nasud, resign! (Mr. President, kung wala kang pag-ibig at aspirations para sa iyong bansa, resign!),” Mayor Duterte said.
The mayor also compared the governance situation between the past and present administrations in the country.
Mayor Duterte is the youngest child of former President Rodrigo Duterte and the sibling of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Tensions began to arise between the Marcoses and Dutertes due to apparent conflicts between House Speaker Martin Romualdez, a cousin of Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., and VP Sara Duterte on various issues. These include alleged attempts to oust Romualdez, blocking Duterte's confidential fund as Department of Education Secretary, suspending SMNI, media company of Kingdom of God founder Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, due to the alleged billion-peso travel fund of the House Speaker, and most recently, regarding the People's Initiative to amend the 1987 Constitution.
It is remembered that President Marcos and Vice President Duterte were from the same party when they ran as top officials of the country in 2022 under the "UniTeam."
