Working student who was asked ‘Bakit, matalino ka ba?’ before, passes 2023 Bar exams

Have you ever experienced being doubted by others after they learn about the career path you want to pursue or the life choices you want to make? It's the kind of situation where they don't really know you well, but they've already formed judgments.

Congratulations, Atty. Kristine Barillo De Los Santos!

That's the story of Atty. Kristine B. De Los Santos, one of the successful examinees in the 2023 Bar examinations.

In her Facebook post, she shared an anecdote about encountering another job applicant in a company she applied to.

Upon learning about her intention to enter law school, the other applicant seemed to have posed a somewhat insulting question to her.

"BAKIT, MATALINO KA BA?," she started.

“9 years ago, nag-aapply ako sa trabaho as a fresh graduate. May nakasabay akong applicant na medyo nakachikahan ko naman. He asked me ano inaapplyan ko. Sabi ko admin staff lang and preferred ko sana yung walang pasok pag weekends kasi plan ko mag-aral ng law. Gulat sya sabay sabing ‘Bakit, matalino ka ba?’”

“I was caught off guard. In that moment, di ko mahagilap yung words para sagutin ang tanong nya.”

Fortunately, she secured a job, but it wasn't with the company she initially applied to. After working for a year, she decided to take the entrance exam for law school in a state university.

Without a backup plan in case she didn't pass, the said state university was her sole option considering her financial situation. Fortunately, she passed the exam and made it through the panel interview.

“My job was in Paranaque whereas PUP is located in Manila. At bilang probinsyana na hindi sanay sa byahe at nahihilo kahit sumakay lang ng jeep, I had to resign from my first job para lumipat sa Manila.”

“Again, no back-up plan in case mahirapan maghanap ng bagong work to support my studies. Lo and behold, nahirapan nga.”

Like other success stories, Kristine became a working student just to get through law school while supporting herself financially. She openly admits that balancing studies and work was not an easy feat, especially considering the demands of law school. She persevered through seven years of education.

“Sa 7 years na yun, pakiramdam ko naubos ako. Naubos ang kumpyansa ko sa sarili ko, naubos ang excitement kong maging abogado. My last semester was my last chance in PUP dahil naka-appeal na ko nun for overstaying since may residency limit na 6 years sa PUP.”

“So sabi ko kay Lord hayaan nya na kong makagraduate man lang..kahit yun lang. At least matapos ko man lang. What a relief, naka-graduate din, face to face graduation pa. Kaya kulang na lang tumulo luha ko habang nagmamartsa.”

Similar to what she did when she entered law school without a backup plan, she took a similar risk when deciding to take the Bar exams.

“Then sabi ko, ‘Lord, sagarin ko na, andito na rin naman. Magtake na ko ng bar. Kayo na po bahala sakin.’ La eh, nung nagresign ako sa government job ko, wala na naman ako back-up plan. 😅"

“Yung savings ko enough lang para sa application for bar exams at pang enrol sa review center tska daily allowance. No allocation for books and other review materials.”

“Fortunately, a friend influenced me to become an insurance agent. So habang nagrereview for bar, may income pa rin kahit papano.”

Similar to what she did when she entered law school without a backup plan, she took a similar risk when deciding to take the Bar exams.

Three days before the actual Bar exams, she mentioned getting sick. On the second day of the exams, she experienced abdominal pain due to dysmenorrhea.

She expressed a desire to give up, but she decided to entrust everything to God. After all, why would she give up now? So, she composed herself and answered what needed to be answered.

When the results came out, she admitted feeling nervous. She decided to keep herself busy on that day. However, when she was about to check her name on the list, her friends beat her to it. Screenshots showing her name were sent to her. She couldn't help but become emotional while inside a laundry shop.

So, if she were to face the guy who applied with her again and asked if she was intelligent, she would have an answer for him.

“Kay kuya na nagtanong kung matalino ba ko, heto na sagot ko: Hindi po ako matalino, pero may pangarap ako at marunong ako lumaban hanggang dulo.”

At the end of the post, she expressed her gratitude to her parents, all the people who helped and believed in her, and most especially to the Almighty.

“Mama, papa, di ko pa maprovide mga material gifts sainyo kaya ito muna regalo ko sainyo. I hope napasaya ko kayo. Bawi ako sa mga panahon na absent ako sa mga importanteng okasyon sa pamilya at di nyo naramdaman ang presence ko. See you soon. 🤗🤗🤗”

“Lord, salamat po sa paggabay at pagmamahal na walang kapantay. All praise and glory are Yours. ☝️.”

Congratulations, Atty. Kristine Barillo De Los Santos!
