Once again, it has been proven that "age is just a number," this time in the successful passing of the Bar exams!
Individuals can achieve their dreams at any age, as demonstrated by two senior citizens who became a source of inspiration to Filipinos by successfully passing the 2023 Bar exams.
On Tuesday, December 5, the Supreme Court announced the outcomes of the Bar examination taken by law graduates in September.
Fellow Bar takers celebrated 62-year-old Rosula Calacala, one of the older individuals who successfully passed the 2023 Bar exams.
Demonstrating that success in passing the bar exam is attainable even after starting law school in her late 50s, Rosula Calacala proudly announced her achievement as one of the bar passers at the age of 62.
Her two children, both Certified Public Accountants, supported her financially during her law education.
Calacala, a local government unit employee from Jones, Isabela, intends to assist her fellow Filipinos in their community as a public servant.
In an interview with "Teleradyo Serbisyo" on DWPM Radyo 630, Calacala mentioned that she decided to study and enter law school because her children had already finished their studies. She saw this as an opportunity to focus on herself for a while.
Calacala openly acknowledges that she has encountered numerous challenges due to her age. Therefore, she is overjoyed not only to have successfully navigated law school but also to have passed the Bar, officially becoming a certified attorney.
“Within my power, I will remain standing for the right of the least, the lost and the last,” she said on a Facebook post, expressing her gratitude to one of her professors.
In addition to Calacala, another senior citizen earned a spot on the list of bar passers, proudly shared by his son on X (Twitter).
During an interview with a local media outlet, Val Bonite revealed that his father, Valentin Laurena Bonite, at the age of 64, persevered and took the bar exams, refusing to lose hope despite falling short the previous year.
Atty. Valentin Bonite told The Summit Express that it was his fourth attempt. He also shared a lesson from his journey of becoming a lawyer.
"It is not about how to pass the bar but about perseverance," he said.
"For those of us who was to take the bar a fourth time, the Supreme Court requires us to enroll a one year refresher course from a university where we have to enroll and pass all eight bar subjects. Then a pre-bar review is a must. The road is not easy but for those of us who persevered, the reward is great," Atty. Bonite added.
Congratulations Atty. Calacala and Atty. Bonite!
