How satisfying it is to savor success when you know you've worked hard for it, and there are people who sacrificed and worked hard for you to achieve it.
Romelyn Sarmoy Gabanto is ecstatic after securing the 9th position in the September-October 2023 Certified Public Accountants Licensure Examinations (CPALE). With a remarkable score of 88.67 percent, this Central Philippine University (CPU) alumna is overjoyed with her achievement.
At the age of 24, Romelyn is the youngest among her four siblings. She comes from Barangay Hibao-an Sur in the Mandurriao District of Iloilo City. Her parents are Roland, a hardworking street sweeper aged 61, and Milagros, a homemaker aged 53.
When she learned that she passed and made it to the Top 10, she immediately woke up her parents and shared the good news with them.
In an interview with Romelyn, she expressed profound gratitude to her father, Roland. Despite his modest income as a street sweeper, she acknowledged that he now has a daughter who has earned a degree.
“My family has always supported me in every challenge; they’ve given everything they can,” she said.
Romelyn claimed that her secret was strict discipline and adherence to her daily routines. She emphasized that, even on days when she lacked motivation to review, maintaining consistency in her study habits made it possible for her to succeed. That, she said, is the advice she would offer to others preparing for board exams like hers.
Meanwhile, Roland did not finish his own education, so he didn't want the same to happen to his child. Regardless of the course Romelyn wanted, he worked hard to provide and support her. He expressed that whatever path his child chooses after college, he will continue to support and guide her along the way. Romelyn received an invitation for a courtesy visit to Iloilo officials on October 10, during which Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed his plans to extend a job offer to her.
“I’ve proposed a role for her at the Iloilo City Hall. Initially, as a contract of service, but upon her formal oath as a CPA, she’ll be inducted into our accounting department,” Mayor Treñas told a media outlet.
The Board of Accountancy conducted the CPA licensure examination, and the Professional Regulation Commission revealed that out of 8,734 candidates, 2,740 successfully passed.
Congratulations, Romelyn!
