It was a historic moment for Nicaragua as Palacios is the first representative from their country to win the Miss Universe title. She was also the second woman from Central America to be crowned Miss Universe after Justine Pasek of Panama in 2002.
Prior to Miss Universe, Palacios competed in Miss World 2021 as Miss World Nicaragua 2020, placing in the Top 40.
During the competition's final Q&A portion, the Top 3 contestants were asked who would they choose if they were in another woman's shoes for a year.
Palacios picked the 18th-century British philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, who she said broke boundaries and “gave an opportunity to many women.”
Miss Australia paid tribute to her mother, expressing a desire to experience life from her perspective. Miss Thailand drew inspiration from Malala Yousafzai, citing her remarkable struggles and achievements.
Palacios succeeds the 2022 Miss Universe R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States.
Miss Colombia Camila Avella and Miss Puerto Rico Karla Guilfú rounded out the top five.
Meanwhile, Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Dee managed to reach the Top 10 of the competition.
The 72nd edition of Miss Universe marked the first time for the pageant to allow mothers and wives to compete. Among the candidates were two mothers, two transgender women, and a plus-sized candidate.
