Former security guard-turned-lawyer now BuCor’s Chief Legal Officer

Many have been inspired by the story of an Igorot security guard who became a lawyer after passing the Bar exam in 2015, and until now, continues to serve as an inspiration to others who aspire to fulfill their dreams.

Roy Lawagan, a native of Sagada in the Mountain Province and employed as a security guard, has recently attained the title of a lawyer.

Lawagan managed to balance working as a security guard at the Commission on Audit office in La Trinidad, Benguet while studying law in the evening. To add to that, he is even the head of the family.

Juggling roles in his life was reportedly not easy, especially during times when he worked doubly hard as a security guard, all while his wife was pregnant.

Roy is the fourth among nine siblings, and becoming a lawyer was reportedly his father's dream. His sisters pursued Political Science, but none of them became a full-fledged lawyer. After completing the prerequisite course in Criminology at the University of Baguio, Roy continued his legal studies at Saint Louis University in the same city.

He vowed to himself that he needed to pass the Bar exam to fully become a lawyer.

He considered it a gift to himself and a fulfillment of his father's dream, which had also become his own aspiration.

In his initial attempt in 2014, Roy did not succeed in the Bar exam despite being enrolled in a review center. In his second attempt in 2015, he opted for self-study.

Fortunately, he did not disappoint, as he was among the 1,731 board takers who passed the 2015 Bar Exam.

During the administration of Former President Rodrigo Duterte, Atty. Lawagan was assigned as the Chief Legal Officer at the Bureau of Corrections, alongside fellow Cordillerans General Gerald Bantag, who served as the BuCor Chief, and Gabriel P. Chaclag, who held the position of BuCor's Chief Public Information Officer.

Very inspiring, right?
