MANILA, Philippines – Local government units in CALABARZON announced suspension of face-to-face classes for today, October 9, 2023 (Monday) due to volcanic smog or vog from Taal Volcano.

Vog, an acidic gas that may severely irritate the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract, has been observed over the volcano's caldera on Sunday, according to Philippine Institute of of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

State volcanologists advised that Taal Volcano is still in Alert Level 1, which means that it is still in abnormal condition and should not be interpreted to have ceased unrest nor ceased the threat of eruptive activity.

According to the Office of Civil Defense CALABARZON on Facebook, classes in all levels (except where indicated) and in both public and private schools in the following areas will be suspended or shift from face-to-face to modular distance learning on Monday, October 9, 2023 (refresh page for updates):

The health department continues to advise communities affected by the volcanic smog to stay indoors and close doors and windows, wear a N95 mask if needed to go out, drink plenty of water to avoid eye irritation and immediately go to the nearest hospital if necessary.
