‘Highest mark worldwide!’ UST grad tops int’l management accounting exams

MANILA, Philippines – What a college graduate hopes for is to pass the feared licensure examination that will grant them the mark of being a legitimate professional. While it's already an achievement to make it into the top 10 or even just to pass, what if you not only passed but ranked number 1 and that too on a worldwide scale?

A graduate of the Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Shannen Jagwani, achieved the top score globally in the certified management accounting (CMA) examinations for the May to June 2023 cycle.

According to “The Varsitarian,” the official student newspaper publication of UST, written by Hannah Joyce V. Andaya published on October 5, 2023, this certification test is internationally recognized for management accountants, and Shannen graduated cum laude from UST in 2022.

During the interview, Jagwani expressed that she has conviction that simply achieving success in the CMA exam will unlock numerous prospects for both her and fellow passers.

These opportunities will enable them to expand their expertise and abilities, applying what they have learned, and their skills not only within the Philippines but on a global scale as well.

Jagwani received the Priscilla S. Payne Award for Outstanding Student Achievement for her exceptional performance in the CMA exams.

She also passed the licensure examinations for certified public accountants (CPA) in October 2022.

In contrast to the locally sanctioned CPA boards by the Philippine Regulation Commission, the CMA certification holds global recognition, granting its successful candidates the opportunity to pursue accounting careers internationally.

Based on the report, the outcomes of the CMA exams are not made public.

The CMA exams are overseen by the Institute of Management Accountants, a global organization representing more than 140,000 accountants.

The CMA exams for the May to June 2023 cycle took place on May 22 and June 20 at the Ateneo de Manila University for candidates within the Philippines.

Congratulations, Shannen! You are not only a source of pride for your parents and alma mater but for the entire Philippines!
