MANILA, Philippines – Just two more victories needed to bring home the gold medal!
Gilas Pilipinas will battle against host China in the semi-finals of 2023 Asian Games men’s basketball tonight, October 4 at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium.
It will mark the first time Gilas Pilipinas play in a semis of the Asian Games since 2002.
The Philippines looks to assert mastery of the opponent after beating China, 96–75 in their last meeting at this year's World Cup.
But this time, the nationals will play without NBA veteran Jordan Clarkson, the one who delivered 34 points for Gilas. China is expected to rely on homecourt advantage as their star players Kyle Anderson and Zhou Qi are also not playing.
Gilas is hoping to continue their ability to adjust after avoiding a disaster in their 84-83 quarterfinals victory over Iran on Tuesday. In this tight win, veterans June Mar Fajardo and Justin Brownlee took charge for the national team with a couple of key baskets.
China on the other hand defeated South Korea, 84-70 in their quarterfinals match. They also have a dominant wins, sweeping Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, and Mongolia in the group stage.
The Philippines last reached the finals of Asian Games in 1990.
A win against China tonight will secure for the country's first Asian Games medal in men's basketball since bagging bronze in 1998.
Gilas Pilipinas vs China match is set at 8 pm.
