Star PBA player 'collapsed during an out-of-town trip, may never play again' – report

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas can’t seem to have a break from drawbacks. Coaching staff woes, player ineligibility issues, and injuries. Tough luck indeed for the national squad.

Veteran sports columnist Homer Sayson shared in a Twitter post Wednesday about a PBA player who’s still in his prime, collapsed during an out-of-town trip.

Sayson even added that the player, after undergoing several medical tests, could be suffering from a serious heart condition.

To make the matter more worrisome, the columnist fears that this could be the end for the player’s basketball career.

Sayson’s followers are clearly perplexed and alarmed about the columnist’s blind sports item.

Out of curiosity, Filipino basketball fans quickly hypothesized who this troubled player could be.

Many speculate it’s Gilas Pilipinas guard, RR Pogoy due to potential hints:

Coach Tim Cone officially ruled Pogoy out of the Hangzhou Asian Games due to undisclosed injury or health reasons.

The TNT guard himself posted a couple of cryptic photos on Instagram where fans interpreted the former Far Eastern University Tamaraw in dire need of a miraculous turn of events.

As of writing, both Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) neither confirm nor deny the rumor about Pogoy. In fact, no announcement has been made yet.

In July this year, Bronny James, Los Angeles Lakers Lebron James’ eldest son who plays for USC Trojans also collapsed during a team workout. Physicians concluded that the younger James has congenital heart problems.

It isn’t clear however, if Lebron Jr. would still pursue his basketball dreams and follow King James’ footsteps.

In the same month, a high school basketball varsity player in Alabama, Caleb White, suffered the same fate as James Jr. The former, however, didn’t make it.

This only shows that basketball players, even though physically active, are still susceptible to heart ailment and this should also be a concern for everyone.

Should Sayson’s scoop pertains to Pogoy, it will be a huge blow for the Philippine basketball community especially for Gilas Pilipinas as the crafty guard was exceptional during the FIBA World Cup.
