MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national basketball team Gilas Pilipinas is hoping for a miracle as they face mighty Italy in the First Round of FIBA World Cup 2023 tonight, August 29, 2023 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Gilas Pilipinas suffered a heartbreaking 80-70 loss to Angola last Sunday that put them in a dimmer chance to advance to the next round and get Paris Olympics slot reserved for the highest-placed Asian squad.
Tonight, world no. 40 Philippines must beat world no. 10 Italy by 13 points or more in order to overhaul Italy’s point differential advantage and move on to the next round. In addition, Angola must first lose to Dominican Republic in their 4pm game today. If the tides favor Gilas, it will result to a scenario of triple tie between Philippines, Angola and Italy.
Here's FIBA rule in case of ties:
If 2 or more teams have the same win-loss record of all the games in the group, the game(s) between these 2 or more teams shall decide on the classification. If these 2 or more teams have the same win-loss record of the games between them, further criteria shall be used in the following order:
Philippines currently sits at the bottom of Group A with a 0-2 record.
Reports said that Italy won all of its 11 games against Asian teams in the World Cup, including Philippines during the 2019 tournament in China.
Filipinos are hoping for Gilas to fight hard and improve efficiency in field goals.

"We took care of the ball a lot better but we just couldn't make shots. 18 percent on three-pointers is not going to get it done. Basketball is a game of points and if you can't put enough points on the board it's hard to win," Gilas coach Chot Reyes said after their game against Angola.
