MANILA, Philippines – At least 26 people have died after a passenger boat capsized in Laguna Lake off Binangonan, Rizal on Thursday, July 27, according to local disaster officials.
In a Facebook post, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said forty (40) passengers have been rescued.
The motorbanca Princess Aya left Binangonan at around 12:30 p.m. en route to Barangay Gulod, Talim Island.
Reports said that strong winds and heavy rain caused its passengers to panic and move to one side of the vessel. The boat overturned less than 50 meters away from Barangay Kalinawan at around 1 p.m.
The PCG said the maximum capacity of the boat is only 42.
In addition, the official manifest listed only 22 passengers.
Princess Aya was allowed to sail since the storm signals due to Typhoon Egay have been lifted on Thursday.
The PCG said they would investigate why the passengers were not wearing life jackets.
Earlier, the PCG resumed their search and rescue/retrieval operations.
