MANILA, Philippines – A 22-year-old boxer from General Santos City died four days after collapsing during a boxing match at Imus Sports Gymnasium last Saturday, May 6.
Kenneth Egano failed to hear that he defeated his opponent, Jason Facularin, by unanimous decision in an eight-round bantamweight bout. He collapsed in his corner while awaiting the announcement of the decision. He was immediately taken to Imus Doctors Hospital. Egano's opponent knocked him out, which most likely caused the brain hemorrhage that led to his coma.
After four days in a coma, Egano passed away on Wednesday, May 10, as confirmed by his stable, Amoy Boxing. The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) expressed their condolences to the fallen fighter.
According to reports, Egano earlier promised his mother that he would end his boxing career if he fails to become a world champion in 3 years.
Egano had a record of 7-1 with 3 knockouts. Boxing champ and fellow Sarangan (people of Sarangani) former Senator Manny Pacquiao, expressed his condolences and promised to pay for Egano's expenses. It was Pacquiao's MP Promotion that showed the bout that killed Egano through his Blow-by-Blow boxing show. According to GAB’s investigation, there was no mismatch, and the program was not negligent in terms of medical routines.
Pacquiao said, “boxing is truly a dangerous sport and the boxers deserve nothing but respect as they put their lives on the line.”
Trainer Freddie Roach also extended his condolences and stated, “My condolences to the Egano family, the Filipino boxing community, and everyone affected by this loss. Rest in peace, Kenneth Egano.”
