MANILA, Philippines – A nursing student from Cebu has gained recognition for her quick response that saved the life of a fruit vendor on Monday, January 30, 2023.
Angyl Faith Ababat, a second-year nursing student from the University of Cebu (UC), didn’t hesitate to help a vendor named Bernadeta Zamora. According to reports and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, Zamora was in a heated argument with her live-in partner, Edwin Salazar Lumacad, while she was selling fruits at C. Padilla Street in Cebu City.
When their altercation escalated, Lumacad pulled out his knife and slashed the victim’s throat. After that, he was seen casually leaving the gruesome scene. However, passersby who witnessed the incident apprehended him until authorities arrived to arrest him.
In the video, passersby, including Ababat, were among those who rushed to attend to the victim. Zamora was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. She survived the incident and is recovering thanks to their quick response.
In an interview, Ababat said she was hesitant to help because there were nearby medicine students, and she assumed they would attend to the victim. But no one came forward, and when she saw that the victim was about to collapse, she immediately rushed towards her.
The student was grateful for the knowledge she gained from their Related Learning Experience (RLE) which enabled her to provide immediate care to the wounded victim.
“Thankful sad ko sa akong mga RLE Clinical Instructors sa UC kay they taught us man sad the basics and especially sa wound care,” Ababat added. [I’m also thankful to my RLE Clinical Instructors in UC because they taught us the basics, and especially about wound care.]
The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) commended the nursing student for her bravery and exemplary actions. Police Colonel Ireneo Dalogdog praised Ababat's good deed and said that she is deserving of becoming a nurse.
Meanwhile, the University of Cebu has nothing but praise for their “Good Samaritan” student. They posted about Ababat's good deeds on Facebook and wrote, “Faith in humanity restored by one of our nursing students. Kudos! Angyl for the kind deed and ingenuity that you showed to people in need.”
