MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe Thailand 2022 Anna Sueangam-Iam brought her family with her on the 71st Miss Universe preliminary competition as she honored them in her evening gown on Thursday, January 12 (Manila time).
The 23-year-old Thai beauty queen donned a stunning gown made of aluminum pull-up tabs from drink cans and Swarovski crystals. But behind the unique beauty of the gown was the heartwarming story of Anna’s struggles and family.

The 23-year-old Thai beauty queen donned a stunning gown made of aluminum pull-up tabs from drink cans and Swarovski crystals. But behind the unique beauty of the gown was the heartwarming story of Anna’s struggles and family.

According to a post on Miss Universe Thailand, the aluminum pull-up tabs from drinks were a reminder of how her father worked as a garbage collector while her mother was a street sweeper and housekeeper. She was also brought up by her great-grandmother who was a virtuous nun. The combination of the aluminum pull-up tabs and Swarovski crystals symbolizes how garbage can sparkle like a gem.
Because of her background, Anna was dubbed by others as “the garbage beauty queen,” but it didn't stop her from achieving her dreams. Anna inspired her followers by saying that our circumstances in life must not limit us to believe that we can change. She stated, “You must not get stuck with the murky surroundings you were born into, but do believe you have the power to change your own life for the better.”
The upcycled dress was designed by “MANIRAT” and called the “Hidden Precious Diamond Dress.” Anna is competing against our Philippine bet Celeste Cortesi for the 71st Miss Universe crown. The coronation night will be on January 15 (Manila time) live from the New Orleans Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
