MANILA, Philippines – Kakai Bautista surprised many netizens when she revealed that she’s the singer behind the iconic “Maynila” theme song.
On TikTok, the singer-comedienne shared a video of herself singing the popular jingle “Mahal Kong Maynila” as she revealed that she’s the original singer. The theme song became a part of many netizens' childhood memories as it was the theme song of the TV anthology show "Maynila,” hosted by former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza.The show aired on GMA Network starting in 2002 and ending in December 2020. The song was composed by Vince De Jesus and had the iconic line, “Mahal kong Maynila, sayo’y hindi mawawalay.” Another rendition of the song was sung by Noel Cabangon in 2015.
Kakai’s video went viral with over 3.8 million views as netizens were surprised at the revelation. Many also went down memory lane and shared how the song was part of their childhood.
