MANILA, Philippines – Actress Ella Cruz drew flak on social media after she made a remark that history is like ‘tsismis’ or gossip.
The actress will portray the role of Irene Marcos in the upcoming Marcos film, “Maid in Malacanang.” During the presscon of the controversial movie, she was asked about the lessons she learned in history and while making the film.
Ella remarked that it’s impossible to know ‘real history’ because it’s like gossip with biases and opinion.
She said, “History is like tsismis. It is filtered and dagdag na rin, so, hindi natin alam what is the real history. Andoon na iyong idea, pero may mga bias talaga. As long as we're here alive at may kanya-kanyang opinion, I respect everyone's opinion.”
“Kasi struggling na eh, last three days! Kahit naman sila struggling even right now, di ba? So, paano kaya iyon na there (was) so much pressure on their side during those times?” she added.
Ella was referring to the last 3 days of the Marcos family in the Malacanang, which is the highlight of their film.
Ella’s statements didn’t sit well with many netizens, celebrities, and historians. Many aired their disagreement and said that history is based on facts and not rumors.
Gretchen Ho tweeted the difference between facts and opinions. She said, “History’s narrative, while subject to the perspective of the author, must be written based on facts, and not opinion.”
Filipino public historian Ambeth Ocampo also couldn’t help but comment to air his disagreement on the actress’ remark. He said, “History may have bias but it is based on fact and not opinion. Real history is about real truth, not lies, not fiction.”
Meanwhile, influencer Xian Gaza who had his own fair share of "history" with Ella explained to her the differences of history, rumors, and historical revisionism.
"HISTORY — Si Xian Gaza ay business partner ni Ella Cruz, sila ay matalik na magkaibigan. Si Xian ay family friend ng kanyang pamilya. Si Xian ay nabaliw kay Ella, minahal niya ito ng sobra. Palagi silang magkasama from October to December 2016.
See the difference now? with love, XIAN GAZA"
Ella became a trending topic as netizens flooded social media with memes and reactions. Here are some of them:
A student tweeted, "Hello Ella Cruz (@itsEllaCruz ) I am a history major student and just to clarify, we do not go to our campus or museum just to flock and talk about "chismis". We study really hard everyday through reading and authenticating data to give the rightful information and preserve history."

My coffee is black = Fact
My coffee is bitter = Opinion
History = Facts
Tsismis = Opinion https://t.co/O0BArdISau
