The team had an impressive performance of 25-14, 25-20, 25-15, winning against Malaysia at the Quang Ninh Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Jaja Santiago, Ces Molina, and Mylene Paat took turns earning scores with their quick attacks and unstoppable net defense. Filipinos cheered for Santiago as this was her return after missing the 2019 SEA Games. The team dominated the third set and ended it with a forced error and a spike.

Jema Galanza, Alyssa Valdez, and Kat Tolentino defended the team’s lead. In the end, Santiago earned 15 points, including five kill blocks. Molina contributed 12 points while Valdez and Rea Meneses added 7 markers. Paat had nine points on eight kills.

The Philippine women's team’s victory was a great winning debut for their Brazilian coach Jorge Souza de Brito as their national team head coach. To qualify for the finals, the Philippine team needs to finish in the top 2 in pool play.

The team will face Thailand, the defending champion on Saturday at 3 pm. The Filipinas will be up for a challenge since Thailand's women’s volleyball team has won every gold medal in the last 13 SEA Games. Meanwhile, the Philippines last won a gold in women’s volleyball back in 1993.

Earlier, the Philippine women’s volleyball had a 2-week training camp in Brazil where they got to play and practice against strong and young teams.
