MANILA, Philippines – Carlos Yulo bagged the gold medal in the men’s all-around in artistic gymnastics in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Quan Ngura Sports Palace in Vietnam on Friday, May 13.
Yulo impressed the judges with his impressive performance in the six apparatuses. He clinched the top spot with a score of 85.150, just a few points away from the second placer Le Thanh Tung of Vietnam (84.040), and Dinh Phuong Thanh (82.450) who placed third.
Towing in the success was the rest of the men’s team who bagged the silver medal in their overall performance with a score of 301.600. Vietnam bagged the gold medal with a score of 321, 250. Singapore won the bronze medal with a score of 297.650.
The Philippine men’s team was composed of Juancho Miguel Besana, John Matthew Vergara, Jann Gwynn Timbang, and Justine Ace de Leon. It was the first time that Yulo competed in the biennial meet with a complete team.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion was proud of their victory but admitted they were expecting at least four gold medals. She said, “It’s not bad first day at all. Yeah, we are expecting more, so much more actually.”
Yulo was also proud of his achievement saying, “All I’m thinking is how to perform well and I think we did well.”
Earlier, Yulo said he’s treating the SEA Games like it’s the Olympics when it comes to preparation and training. He said, “Every time it’s the Olympics that I think of.Because of the experience I had in Tokyo. I may not have won a medal but it made me want to become better. That’s what I learned for that experience.”
