MANILA, Philippines –
Nine presidential candidates shared their opinion and recommendations on the proposed 4-day work week amid the skyrocketing global oil prices fueled by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
During the PiliPinas Debates 2022 on Saturday, March 19, most of the candidates were in favor of the 4-day work week.
According to Senator Panfilo Lacson, he agrees if the work hours will be extended to ten hours to increase productivity.
Lawyer and doctor Jose Montemayor highlighted the need to stimulate the economy, especially amid the pandemic. He said it's important for people to go out.
He said, "Nasa pandemya pa tayo. Kailangan ma-stimulate ang economy by consumption, spending. Yung three days na yun, sayang din yun. Pag hindi nag-circulate ang pera, lalong magiging stagnant."
Mayor Isko Moreno said the 4-day work week might not work in all industries.
He said, "I think depende sa industriya. Kung BPO, it can have one day work-from-home. Pero may mga industriya tayo na kailangan ng physical presence for more productivity, for example mga planta."
Pacquiao also agreed that the proposal might not apply to all industries. He also commented on the extended hours.
He said, "Hindi po lahat. Pwedeng sampung oras kung magaan ang trabaho. Alalahanin na may mga trabaho na hindi madali. Yung mabibilad ka buong araw. Kawawa naman yung ating kababayan."
Leody De Guzman pushed for overtime pay of around 30% if there are extended hours.
He said, "Pwede naman yung four days yung work pero kung yan ang gagawin 12 hours, para makumpleto yung 48 hours a week. Ang dapat gawin yung four days, may overtime pay, may 30% overtime pay."
Vice President Leni Robredo also agreed with De Guzman's suggestion that the workers need to be compensated well for any extended hour at work.
She said, "Agree po ako kay Ka Leody na siguraduhin na yung take home ng manggagagwa hindi masho-shortchange. Kailangan commensurate sa oras ng trabaho yung take home nila."
