MANILA, Philippines – Convicted murderer and former policeman Jonel Nuezca has died at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), the Bureau of Corrections (BOC) confirmed on Wednesday, December 1.
According to the BOC, Nuezca's time of death was at 6:44 p.m. on November 30.
While investigation is still underway, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag revealed a few details on Nuezca's death.
Chaclag said that before Nuezca died, he was walking outside his dormitory building at the New Bilibid Prison on Tuesday night. He simply collapsed. He was declared dead at the Bilibid Hospital. An autopsy is expected as the cause of death is still being probed.
"He was brought unconscious to the NBP Hospital by his cell mates at 6:30 pm yesterday, Nov 30, 2021, " Chaclag said.
"Investigation is ongoing to determine if there is foul play in the incident,” the BuCor spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, Justice Undersecretary Deo Marco said they have already asked the BuCor for a copy of their investigation report.
On Nuezca's death certificate, the cause of death reads: "DOA ( death on arrival) Undetermined, for autopsy."
Nuezca was convicted of murder for shooting his neighbors Sonya Gregorio, 52, and her son Frank Anthony, 25, at point-blank range. The incident created such a ruckus as it was caught on camera. It became controversial as it became a glaring example of police abuse.
The Paniqui, Tarlac Regional Trial Court Branch 106 sentenced Nuezca to reclusion perpetua or up to 40 years in prison for each count of murder. Nuezca was also ordered to pay damages worth P952,560 to the Gregorio family.
