MANILA, Philippines – Carlos Yulo dominated the vault apparatus at the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Kitakyushu, Japan on Sunday, October 24.
After losing his title in the floor exercise on Saturday due to a costly penalty, Yulo bagged the gold medal at the world championships when he competed in the men’s vault category.
This is Yulo's second world champion title, following his victory in the floor exercise in 2019, which guaranteed him a spot in the Tokyo Olympics.
Yulo was the first of the eight finalists to perform, and he instantly raised the bar with a 14.800 on his first vault. On his second, he performed a Dragulescu, considered one of the hardest elements on vault. His performance garnered a lot of praise from the commentators. He earned a 15.033 on his second and averaged 14.916 mark in the finals.
The 21-year-old gymnast also grabbed a silver medal in the men’s parallel bars competition. With this win, Yulo becomes the first Filipino gymnast to win multiple world championship medals in a single event.
Last August, Yulo admitted being disappointed when he missed a podium finish in the men's vault apparatus competition in the Tokyo Olympics.
