MANILA, Philippines – Nesthy Petecio won in the quarterfinals of women's featherweight in the boxing competitions of the Tokyo Olympics.
Petecio is now on her way to achieving her dream of bringing home the Philippines' second gold medal after she won against Colombia's Yeni Castaneda in the quarterfinals of women's featherweight on Wednesday morning, July 28. Her victory against Casteneda by a 5-0 unanimous decision.
Petecio now has secured a second Olympic medal for the Philippines this year. This will also be the Philippines' first Olympic medal in boxing since Onyok Velasco's silver in 1996. She is on her way to advancing to the semifinals of the 54-57kg weight class.
On Monday, Petecio defeated world No. 1 Lin Yu-ting in their round-of-16 match. Her coach Don Abnett is very confident about the Filipino boxer's victory in the succeeding matches.
Petecio, the world champion in 2019 is now No. 7 ranked featherweight in the world. She is also confident in her preparations for this Olympics. She said, "Pinaghandaan po namin talaga ito."
