Japan’s Nishiya Momiji grabbed the gold with a total score of 15.26 while Brazil’s Rayssa Leal captured the silver with her 14.64 performance. Nakayama Funa settled for the bronze with a 14.49.
Tokyo 2020 is Didal's first Olympics appearance as her sport, skateboarding, debuts into the Summer Games this year.
Prior to the final results, Didal became emotional and even teary-eyed. She said, "Ano man mangyari, I’ll be proud to represent the Philippines."
Didal's Coach Anthony Claravall shared how important it was for the skater to feel comfortable and have fun for her to bring out her best performance. Admitting Didal was hurt during her routine, it didn't stop her from giving it her all.
“She was like, the knee and ankle are still there, so I’m gonna still do it,” Claravall recalled.
For the preliminaries of the Street Skating category, Didal competed against 20 skaterz all over the world. They were given two 45-second runs and 5 tricks. Judges will give speed, the difficulty of tricks, originality, timing, and stability. Those who are included in the Top 8 will skate their way to the final round to determine who gets to earn the coveted Olympic medals.
