MANILA, Philippines – Filipino "Golden Boy" Carlos Yulo has secured his slot in the Artistic Gymnastics men’s vault final of the Tokyo Olympics at Ariake Gymnastics Centre in Japan.
Yulo still has a chance at clinching the Philippines' historic gold medal as he continues his journey in the Olympics. He qualified for the vault finals of the men's artistic gymnastics after landing 6th spot in vault with a score of 14.712 in the qualifications.
However, the 21-year-old gymnast shared his disappointment over his floor exercise performance which was considered his pet event. Filipino fans had been eyeing a gold for Yulo for floor exercise after he won the world championship in 2019 for the same event.
Seemingly at loss for words, Yulo admitted feeling hurt when he finished at rank 44 out of 64. His routine tallied 13.566, way out of the Top 8 that would have paved his way to the floor exercise's finals. Yulo had a shaking start in his routine where he missed landings.
"Pangit po talaga (yung unang landing). Pati po yung pangalawa," he recalled.
"Ewan ko po ano nangyari," Yulo said.
He explained that he came to the event well prepared and did his best.
"Ewan ko rin po ano nangyari. Preparado naman po ako. At hindi naman po ako kinakabahan. Well, noong una, pero tama lang," Yulo added.
In the end, the gymnast said that even with his efforts, maybe it was just not meant to be. "Ginawa ko naman po ang lahat. Ganon po siguro talaga," Yulo said.
"Masakit. Masakit po s'ya. Masakit po talaga" said Yulo, his voice starting to crack.
