MANILA, Philippines – Residents of the newly inaugurated Basecommunity Housing in Port Area, Manila have aired their complaints against the P2,000 fee they are being charged monthly.
In a video posted by Khopars VLOG, a 61-year-old lady resident of Manila’s first townhouse-style project expressed her dismay over the monthly fee. According to the female resident, she was not aware that they will be charged a P2,000-monthly fee, which is fully refundable once they decide to vacate the house.
“Maganda. Maganda naman talaga. Maganda ang bahay. Pero pag gising mo ng umaga, ang iniisip mo yung pambayad mo,” the woman said.
When asked if she is capable of paying the monthly fee, the woman said that it is possible if they have a livelihood.
“Kayang bayaran yung P2,000 monthly kung may hanapbuhay ka. Pero kung wala kang hanapbuhay, paano yung pagkain mo? Paano makakayanan na dalawang libo buwan-buwan?”
“Ang panawagan ko bakit kami pinagbabayad habang buhay. Yun ang panawagan ko sa mayor namin,” the female resident added.
Meanwhile, another female resident of the housing project also aired her grievances over the policy that requires residents to pay for the damages in the house once they decide to leave.
“Halimbawa aalis na ako. Diba sabi nila ibabalik yung pera. Eh yung gastos ng bahay na nasira. Kahit anong alaga mo, maluluma at maluluma yan eh,” the woman explained.
Earlier this month, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno led the distribution of 229 housing units at the BaseCommunity to families displaced by fire in Baseco Compound last year. Moreno, who also grew up in a poor community in Tondo, Manila, said that the project will uplift the dignity of the impoverished families in the city.
"Ako ay naniniwala na ang pagtaas ng dignidad sa pagiging mahirap ay ang pagkakaroon ng sariling inyo, may sariling masisilungan kasama ang inyong mga anak," Moreno said.
