MANILA, Philippines – A driver who was suffering from heart attack managed to pull over his jeepney along Mahogany road in Tagaytay City and save the lives of his passengers on Monday, June 21.
The 55-year-old jeepney driver identified as Pepe Rollon later on died on that day. Based on a Facebook post by Cavite Today, Rollon suddenly pulled over in front of Tagaytay Supreme Court after experiencing extreme chest pains.
“Bigla kami itinigil ni manong driver sa harap Ng Tagaytay Supreme Court at sinabing; Hindi ko na Kaya! Napaiyak ako! At that time naisip ko Lord tulungan mo si Tatay makauwi pa Ng buhay sa family nya! At salamat Lord buhay pa kami at safe na nakababa! Salamat Tatay! May God bless you!”
Fellow jeepney drivers and barangay officials immediately came to rush him to the hospital. Unfortunately, Rollon was declared dead in the patrol vehicle.
In an interview with Manila Bulletin, the driver’s daughter Kathlene Paula recounted: “Tinawagan po ako sa trabaho… Sabi ng mga pasahero itinabi daw po ‘yung jeep para wala nang madamay na iba.”
According to Kathlene Paula, her hardworking father was hospitalized at the Philippine General Hospital due to a heart condition earlier this year. Rollon’s doctor recommended that he get a heart bypass but the driver decided not to push through with the procedure.
Kathlene Paula, who currently works at a computer shop, added that Rollon continued driving the jeepney to support his wife and four children, three of whom are still studying.
“Siya lang po talaga ‘yung nagtataguyod po samin, ako po tumutulong na rin lang,” Rollon’s daughter said.
After photos of the incident went viral, netizens praised Rollon for thinking of his passenger’s safety.
“Rest in Peace Tay. Sa huling sandali ng buhay mo naisip mo pa rin ang kaligtasan ng mga pasahero nyo. Saludo po kami sa inyo. Isang anghel ang muling umakyat sa piling ng Panginoon,” netizen Princess Karen Del Rosario commented.
