MANILA, Philippines – A two-year-old boy from Barangay Alas-Asin, Mariveles, Bataan tragically died after falling in a 20-foot well on Sunday, June 6.
According to a report by GMA News, the parents of the boy were unaware that the toddler was following his father who was on his way to work as a construction worker. Unfortunately, the boy apparently fell after stepping on the brittle plywood covering the well which was 20-foot deep and contains 4-feet deep water.
The father of the toddler tried to save his son and went down the well. However, his attempt to rescue his son failed as he passed out while trying to get his son due to the strong stench coming from the well.
Residents and barangay rescuers worked together in order to save the kid’s father. Unable to retrieve the body of the boy who is believed to be dead, they then sought the help of firemen, members of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, as well as the rescue team of the Freeport Area of Bataan.
The boy’s body was eventually recovered but efforts to revive him failed.
While it has not been determined who should be held liable for the child’s untimely demise, several netizens pointed out that the well, which was no longer being used, should be secured to prevent further accidents. Many suggested to seal the well using a cement or to put a fence around it.
“Eh sa nakikita ko kahit sa matanda napaka delikado po ang balon nayon halos pantay narin sa lupa sana naman may naka isip na bakuran ito para sa kaligtasan ng lahat takpan po ng plywood hindi po ito safe para sa kanino manipis lang ang plywood,” netizen Martina Garcia commented.
