MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday approved the recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to extend modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) classification for Metro Manila and four nearby provinces of Bulacan, Laguna, Rizal and Cavite (NCR plus) until May 14, 2021.
Quirino province, Santiago City and Abra are also under modified ECQ for the whole month of May.
The less restrictive general community quarantine (GCQ) is imposed in Cordillera Administrative Region (Apayao, Baguio City, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province), Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Batangas, Quezon, Tacloban City, Iligan City, Davao City, and Lanao del Sur.
The rest of the country is under modified GCQ, the most relaxed quarantine status.
The new quarantine classification will take effect on Saturday, May 1.
Duterte emphasized high risk areas especially in Luzon, Region 6 and Region 9.
Local government units may also express their appeals on community quarantine status.
On Monday, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines breached the 1 MILLION mark.
OCTA Research advised the government on Sunday to scale up testing capacity to at least 150,000. This is to further improve Metro Manila's reproduction rate and positivity rate, which are currently at 0.93 and 19 percent, respectively.
Experts added the need to sustain below 1 reproduction rate for several weeks before easing the community quarantine level of NCR Plus.
