MANILA, Philippines – Barely a month after being recognized for his heroic act, PS9 Cmdr. PMaj Orlyn Leyte was arrested for reported robbery-extortion case in Zamboanga City last March 22.
Last March 2, Leyte was commended for saving the life of a woman who gave birth in an emergency situation in February.
Leyte, along with his subordinates namely PSSg Hegenio Salvador, PCpl Ismael Sasapan, PSSg Asser Abdulkadim, and PCpl Juman Arabani, was nabbed during an entrapment operation based on the complaint of Melanie Casabuena Saloria.
Saloria, a 57-year-old businesswoman from Zamboanga City, claimed that Leyte reportedly asked her to give P90,000 as "settlement" for the victim’s alleged involvement in illegal drug activity.
Based on a Facebook post by the Philippine National Police, the arrested police officers, who are temporarily detained at Zamboanga City Police Office, will be placed under Automatic Leave of Absence.
In a Facebook post, Zamboanga City Police Office explained that the arrest of Leyte is a product the PNP’s internal cleansing program.
“Once again, this Regional Office would like to make it clear that we do not tolerate any wrongdoings of our personnel either officer or members of the ranks. While we intensi-fy our campaign against illegal drugs and effectively manage all kinds of police opera-tions, we do not want any unscrupulous schemes devised by our personnel to ad-vance their personal interest.”
According to a 2019 data of the PNP, 9,172 administrative cases had been filed against offending PNP personnel. Of these cases, 2,806 police officers were dismissed, while 4,721 were suspended. Others were either reprimanded, demoted, suspended or experienced salary forfeiture or withdrawal of privileges.
Launched in 2019, the PNP’s rejuvenated internal cleansing program is based on the squad concept from the Philippine Military Academy wherein a squad leader guides and supervises his squad members.
