MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, March 29, announced the new community quarantine classifications from April 1 to 30 to curb the surge of COVID-19 cases in the country.
Duterte said the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal from March 29 until April 4, 2021 will be retained and subject for further review.
UPDATE: ECQ in 'NCR plus' extended for 1 week
Duterte said the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal from March 29 until April 4, 2021 will be retained and subject for further review.
UPDATE: ECQ in 'NCR plus' extended for 1 week
Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque Jr. announced the enforcement of the ECQ, the strictest community quarantine classification, in Greater Manila Area as the national government’s response to the growing surge in new COVID-19 cases, which is happening not only in the Philippines but in many countries as well, because of the new variants.
In a press briefing on Monday, Roque said the government aims for the public's "total health" in deciding lockdown.
"Maselan po talaga 'yang decision-making. Hindi naman po pupuwede na sa pagnanais nating mapabagal ang COVID-19, mas marami naman ang mamatay dahil sa kagutuman at iba pang dahilan bukod sa COVID-19," he said.
ECQ means imposing stringent limitations on movement and transportation of people, strict regulation of operating industries, provision of food and essential services, and heightened presence of uniformed personnel to enforce community quarantine protocols.
Meanwhile, Quirino Province will be placed under modified ECQ from April 1 to 15 and for de-escalation to general community quarantine (GCQ) of the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) should the situation improve after the said period.
The City of Santiago, Isabela will also be under MECQ from April 1 to 30.
The following areas will be put under GCQ for the whole month of April 30.
The rest of the country shall be placed under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) for the month of April.
COVID-19 infections in the Philippines in the past two weeks are now "2 times higher than what we were reporting three to four weeks ago," said the health department's Epidemiology Bureau chief Dr. Alethea De Guzman.
On Monday, the Department of Health logged new record high of 10,016 daily tally pushing the country's total cases to 731,894. This is the 4th straight day that the daily tally of COVID-19 cases exceeded 9,000.
