MANILA, Philippines – A 46-year-old licensed teacher who is locked up behind bars decided to rekindle his passion in teaching by providing free online tutorials.
Teacher "Robert" who is currently serving his term inside San Juan City Jail led an initiative to make his Sunday productive by helping school children with their studies.
Through San Juan City Jail's "Karunungan sa Kulungan Project", Robert regains his sense of purpose and at the same time helps children.
The former teacher, who has 20 years of experience in teaching conducts tutorial sessions to the children of his fellow inmates via Zoom every Sunday. They reach out to children aged 4 to 7 years old. Currently, they already have four students on their online tutorials.

Teacher Robert's online tutorials even follow the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) under the curriculum of the Department of Education (DepEd). This was made possible under the guidance of Mrs. Hergielyn M. Gaca of DepEd San Juan.
With the assistance of San Juan City Jail Warden Jose Marie Sabeniano, they also made the initiative more special by also distributing school supplies to the children's homes.
"Iyong sense of purpose nya, nakita nya sa loob ng kulungan. na kahit nakakulong, magagawa pa rin natin makabuluhan ang buhay habang may natutulungan," Sabeniano said the initiative has helped both the inmates and also the students.
