Using his birthday money, a 6-year-old kid buys a gold ring for his mom! The sweet gesture has gone viral, especially because most kids will surely opt to buy a toy for themselves if someone gives them money.
When Afiq Edison recently celebrated his birthday at their home in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in Malaysia, he received a gift of RM5 (around Php60 or $1.20) from someone. At first, he did not think much about what he would do with the money, narrated his mother, Sumarnie Edison.
But while Afiq was at the barber shop with his brother and father, he happened to see a jewelry store just across the street. Young as he is at just 6 years old, the boy decided that he would use his birthday money to buy a gift for his mother, instead!
Not really knowing much about the value of his money, Afiq decided right there and then that he will use that money to buy a gift for his mom. Though it wasn’t in their budget, Afiq’s dad decided to give in to the boy’s request, especially because he was just so determined to do it, even with what little money he had.
When Afiq offered to also use his savings to buy the gift, his dad told him he could pick something that’s worth below RM300 (around Php3,500 or $73.30). The kid looked around the shop and eventually settled on something that’s worth RM260 (around Php3,050 or $63.60).
He happily got a gift box for it so he could surprise his mother at home.
Sumarnie admits to having mixed feelings about the gift. As a mom, she took pity on her son for using his birthday money to buy her a gift instead of buying a toy for himself. Yet she also felt proud and happy that he would do this for her. What a sweet and thoughtful kid!
